All students applying for any federal financial aid must file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is the only application students must complete to be considered for all federal financial aid. You can access this form online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/.
FAFSA information is typically uploaded by colleges when you complete the form. However, with the rollout of the new FAFSA, the US Department of Education has delayed this process nationwide. Colleges are anticipating receiving this information from FAFSA by mid-March. It will take time after receiving this information for the college to process all of the information, with the hope that award letters will start to be sent in early April. Some colleges are considering extending enrollment deposit deadlines to make time for students to make informed decisions. Please check with your individual college to determine important dates and deadlines.

If your family’s financial circumstances have changed since you have received your financial aid award letter, you can file an appeal. Contact your college's financial aid office for their appeal process. Here is further advice on how to write a financial aid appeal letter. You can also now utilize
SwiftStudent, a free tool that offers guidance and resources about how to request additional financial aid. In addition to the FAFSA, many colleges request additional information with their own institutional form. Admission and financial aid materials will include specific institutional requirements. A commonly used form is the CSS Profile.

Determining Eligibility for In-State Tuition and State Grants
To determine your residency in North Carolina, all NC colleges require applicants to register with RDS (Residency Determination Service). This service will determine eligibility for in-state tuition and state grant awards. To learn more about RDS, and how it relates to the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), read the Navigating RDS and the FAFSA tip sheet.
