About Admissions Testing
You may take the SAT or ACT or both. Most colleges will accept scores from either test, but make sure to check with the colleges you are applying to confirm which scores they accept. Some schools also require SAT subject tests for placement in classes once you have been accepted. Additionally, some schools also require these tests for admission. You should check with the colleges you are interested in for specific requirements.
You may take the exams as many times as you wish. Most schools will accept your highest individual score in each area, even if they are on different test dates.

Differences between the SAT and ACT
The SAT has two parts: Reading and Writing and Mathematics. The questions on the digital SAT are adaptive, meaning the questions change based upon your performance. Practice is available on the Bluebook App, which is pre-installed in the student's Wake County chromebook. Students should log out of their chromebook, then go to Apps in the bottom left corner to find the Bluebook App.
The ACT contains four subtests: English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science. The test scores range from 1 to 36, with a final composite score ranging from 1 to 36. Click here to look at Sample ACT questions. The ACT will be to all Juniors for free at Leesville on March 13, 2025. Juniors will receive their score report through the mail. PSAT and PreACT
The PSAT is a College Board examination administered in October of every school year. The exam is scored from 20-80 for each of following sections: Critical Reading, Mathematics and Writing. It is meant to be a practice test, and can give you a good idea on what you can do to prepare for the SAT. The PSAT is also used by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation to qualify students for various scholarships based on their Junior year PSAT scores. Colleges use the information from the PSAT as a means to begin communicating with students regarding higher education and financial aid opportunities. Your PSAT score, however, will have no bearing on college admissions.
The PSAT is given in October. If you are interested in taking the PSAT, you must register by a date in September. For last October's details, see the PSAT Flyer 2025. For details on what is covered on the test, visit the PSAT Information page. Students can also access PSAT practice tests online and get diagnostic information that can be used to improve future performance. Please note the practice tests do not count toward scholarship opportunities.
Students who take the PSAT will receive their test book mid-December, along with an instruction sheet on how to access scores. The school does not receive a hard copy of the scores to distribute. For help in understanding PSAT results, go to My College QuickStart. You will need your access code that is printed on the instruction sheet. For general information on how to read the report, go to the College Board's Understanding Your Score page. The counselors are also available to assist.
The PreACT consists of multiple-choice tests in English, math, reading, and science. All Sophomores took the PreACT free of charge at Leesville on November 6, 2025. Students do not need to register for the PreACT since all Sophomores are expected to take the exam.
After you receive your test results, watch the video on understanding your score. You can also access the Using Your PreACT Results Guide. Students are also encouraged to set up an ACT account, as they will take the ACT for free in March during the spring semester of the junior year. Students may email their assigned counselor if they have questions.
